Jackpot. Devil May Cry is officially streaming on Netflix and the new anime series has delivered epic animation, fire needle drops, and all the demon carnage fans could ask for. I recently had the chance to sit down with stars Johnny Yong Bosch (Dante), Scout Taylor-Compton (Lady), and showrunner Adi Shankar to learn more about this new entry in the Devil May Cry lore.
Devil May Cry Interview: Johnny Yong Bosch & Scout Taylor-Compton
Johnny, I know you're not a stranger to the franchise at all, but how was it seeing your Dante on screen for the first time?
Johnny: It's a bit overwhelming, to be honest, you know. It's one of those things that there's, it's wrapped up with excitement, but it's also very scary to take on something so big like this. It's challenging. There's parts that you want to just embrace and let that become part of you, but then there's also some things that…I'm waiting, I'm waiting to see the reaction.
Lady is such a strong female character and we love to see that. Scout, what do you hope newcomers to the series, as well as old fans take away from this version of Lady?
Scout: Oh man, I just really hope that they respect… I really hope that they don't see her as one-dimensional. I just really didn't want to make her one-dimensional. So I really pulled from her scars that she has and [I] really wanted to portray the emotional portion of her while also still bringing that strength. She's obviously this emotionally armored woman from all of the trauma that she's been through, and so I really just wanted to make sure that there were a lot of colors that I played with, with her. But also, you know, giving this guy sh*t all the time in a playful way.
Johnny: Appropriate though.

About Devil May Cry
The show starts out with what is essentially a long cutscene to establish the rules and introduce the characters. Some of this may feel like a repeat for longtime fans but it allows newcomers to get up to speed quickly just like any good episode 1 of an anime. Devil May Cry takes place in a world similar to our own, the only difference is that demons live among us and only a select few individuals know of their existence. Those people are demon hunters, skilled fighters whose job it is to eliminate the threat of these evil forces. The best and most notorious among them is the self-assured, pizza-loving, ladies man Dante (Johnny Yong Bosch who actually voices Nero in the games). Despite his carefree attitude, Dante is more important to this battle to save humanity than he realizes. But when he becomes targeted by the monster White Rabbit (Hoon Lee) and DARKCOM (the shadow government organization), Dante learns he's not exactly human himself.
