Stars Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, and Cailey Fleming shared all about their new movie IF from who their real life IFs are (sorry Blake, Ryan didn't choose you) to working with puppets on set, and more!
INTERVIEW: Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, & Cailey Fleming Talk Puppets & More IF Fun
From writer and director John Krasinski, IF is about a girl (Cailey Fleming) who discovers that she can see everyone’s imaginary friends — and what she does with that superpower — as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect forgotten IFs with their kids. Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carell are absolutely amazing in their roles, but Cailey truly steals the show with her incredible performance as Bea. Getting the chance to chat with these three made my morning, especially as Ryan did what he does best– make everyone laugh.
IFs are beings that go everywhere with us, watching over us, and offering support. These three shared their real life IFs and well, two of them were serious, and one was…well I bet you can guess. Don't tell Blake.
Cailey: My mom goes everywhere with me. She was there every day and she's always there for me. I mean, she's my mom. I love my mom and it was just Mother's Day. I got to spend the day with her. It was really fun.
Steve: My wife would be that person. I don't know much more I can say about that. When we got married, I saw her at the end of the aisle and I was overwhelmed with a sense of calm and appreciation that I had this person in my life and [I was] just imbued with thanks. It's almost 30 years later and I still feel the same way.
Ryan: For me, definitely Steve's wife as well. My marriage is one of those Hollywood arrangement ships, yeah, only actually seen her a few times, but she seems nice.
Gotta love it. On set, the IFs were played by John, using puppets, so that the actors had something real to react with. According to Ryan that meant John could snack him around a bit.
Ryan: Most of the therapy I do is with puppets. It was very helpful. Also, I was beaten a lot. I was beaten by John. If you watch the sort of the B-roll in this stuff. I am abused by these puppets. I know for a fact that that was just John getting his rocks off. Because none of that's in the movie. I mean, getting smacked around by…
Cailey: It was always Cosmo too.
Ryan: Yeah, it was Cosmo a lot. There's a whole scene where he took the Blue puppet and just beat the living crap out of me. And you don't see that anywhere in the movie, do you? No…I was beaten a lot, but it's all crucial to the story…Cloak and dagger.
