Marvel's What If… season 3 continues to be an entertaining, fun, wild, and exciting spin through the animated multiverse. The visuals are pushed once again, delivering bigger, better, and more bad*ss fight sequences.
What If Season 3 Review
Marvel's What If …? reimagines famous events from the MCU and alternate realities pondering what could have happened. It is based on one of my favorite Marvel Comics run where writers got the chance to explore the one million other options that could have happened at any given moment. In Season 3, we are getting a Western, a Bollywood themed episode, and probably one of my favorites– an Avengers-style Power Rangers fighting Kaiju. The multiverse saga isn't going anywhere and after the events of WandaVision, Loki, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, anything and everything continues to be possible.
The Watcher, also known as the most dramatic fan-boy in the universe according to the man behind the voice Jeffrey Wright, has returned and this time he is observing new realities. After the events of Season 2 however, Uatu was bound to have some consequences. And those they come knocking at the end of this incredibly fun series. For the past 3 years, Marvel has released a new season of What If…? where they let their creative juices flow to bring us some fresh, exciting, and sometimes quirky new stories. The animation has continually improved, finding new ways to enhance the visuals they established in the beginning. Sadly, Season 3 marks the end of the yearly What If… (although the Marvel Zombies spin-off is coming in 2025) and many fans, like myself, think it's a little too soon to say goodbye.
One of the things that struck me about the third season of What If…? is that we are getting a preview of what could be our new Avengers lineup, led by Sam Wilson's Captain America. It's exciting to see them assembled here, including Oscar Issac's Moon Knight, a character many of us are eager to see back on our screens. Giving Sam his time to shine was a good move, especially ahead of Captain America: Brave New World's premiere in February. Anthony Mackie is more than ready to stand in the spotlight and lead the team to victory. Another was just more confirmation that the Thunderbolts* is going to be amazing. David Harbour is clearly having a great time playing the Red Guardian, effortlessly bringing that same charisma to the animated anti-hero that he did with the live-action Alexi in Black Widow.
Ultimately the series remains an entertaining, fun, wild, and exciting spin through the multiverse. It also serves as a reminder that the MCU has a bright future, one that is set to push what we think is possible especially given the fact that the first family of Marvel is coming. Oh and did you know our friend The Watcher plays a big role in their comics? Maybe the end of What If…? means that Wright will make the jump to live-action and if that is the plan then I'm ready for it. Although, I do hope that down the road this series is revived, in the same vein as Star Wars Visions, allowing multiple studios and storytellers a chance to tell new superhero stories.
