Deadpool and Wolverine is special to fans not only because these two iconic characters are on screen together (for real this time) but it also means that after waiting 25 years, we finally get to see Wolverine in his comic accurate suit. Hugh Jackman knows this is a big moment and it means just as much to him as it does to us.
Hugh Jackman On Playing Wolverine Again: Putting on that Suit
After saying Logan would be his last time playing Wolverine, Hugh Jackman quickly realized he wasn't done with the character yet. So what made this the right time to come back?
Hugh: The real suit. [Laughter] I watched Deadpool One three days after announcing Logan would be my last. I remember thinking, oops! Because I could see the movie. It wasn't new to me. Ever since I played Wolverine, people have been talking about Deadpool and Wolverine and their rivalry from the comic books. And then, of course, we had a sort of go at it in X-Men, Origins: Wolverine. But I could feel it. I could see it. It was Midnight Run. It was 48 Hours. It was The Odd Couple, Trains, Planes, and Automobiles.
We toyed with the idea, but it was August 14, 2022 and I don't know why, I just knew every cell of my body was yelling at me, I want to do this movie. So much so that I pulled my car over on the side of the LIE and I rang Ryan immediately because I knew that they were getting close to filming. I thought they may have even been filming and I asked him and thankfully he said yes.
Speaking of the yellow and blue, Kevin Feige confirmed why the original X-Men films were missing their comic accurate suits.
Kevin: There were studio execs in charge who knew that The Matrix had been a big hit and The Matrix had black leather, so let's put them in black leather.
Hugh: I gotta say the highlight was putting on that suit, the yellow and blue suit. It had been talked about from the very beginning, those conversations were there. It wasn't like it was never mentioned… Then it sort of became like, I don't know if we can make it work. The moment I put it on, I remember walking out there with Ryan on set, him in the Deadpool, me in the yellow and blue amongst the crew that had done hundreds of movies and seen everything there was, and could feel that everyone was going Oh, okay, this is a moment that should have happened 24 years ago.
Deadpool and Wolverine releases in theaters July 26. It is rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references with a runtime of 2 hours and 7 minutes.
