Genosha is joining the UN and that is a reason to rejoice, or at least it was. When an ominous warning comes things go from lovely to horrifying quickly and some may not make it back to the school alive. Let's get into โRemember Itโ with this X-Men 97 Episode 5 Easter Eggs, Breakdown, and recap.
X-Men 97 Episode 5 Easter Eggs & Breakdown
Trish Tilby is reporting on TV in front of the school. She is talking about mutants. Cut to an interview she had with Beast. In the comics these two also had a relationship. He blushes when she compliments him.
She also interviews Jubilee. Others like Cyclops, Wolverine, and Morph are shown while Trish tells the viewers that Xavier's school is the only home some mutants have ever known. All of this is to promote how the UN is accepting Genosha into its ranks.
On the new Blackbird, Magneto and Gambit are still picking at each other. From the plane the new temple can be seen with statues of Magneto and Professor X.
Genosha looks idyllic with Magneto Freedom posters, nails salons, flying school, and mutant children freely using their powers.
The council wanted an X-Men so they spared a “Jean.” Madelyne Pryor is working with the UN. Valerie Cooper asks Magneto to join them for a meeting before the gala.
Nightcrawler shows up, surprising Rogue and Gambit. He is also on the council to help them with mutant communities of faith.
Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler is a mutant with the ability to teleport himself and others. He also has night vision, the ability to climb walls, and more. Adrian Hough the original voice actor from X-Men The Animated Series returns.
He mentions their gothic adventure in the Alps. In season 3 of the original series, the Alps is where the X-Men first encountered Nightcrawler.
They go to explore the town and play tourists. In this scene are Pixie, Leech, Glob Herman, Loa, Rain Boy, and Slick. If they look familiar you also know about the Academy X comics.
Gambit is suspicious of Genosha and Magneto whom he calls daddy, since M is the one who is building up this nation for the mutants. One reason is that everything seems overpriced. And two- why is Magneto the mutant MVP?
Rogue is drawn to a performance by mutants. Dazzler shoots off fireworks and takes the stage.
Dazzler aka Alison Blaire is a mutant with the ability to transduce sonic vibrations, create lasers with light generation, fly, and more. And yes her hair is technically strawberry blonde in the comics with some of the older versions more red than blonde. In the original cartoon her hair was also more red so I hope that helps with all the internet grumblings.
In the comics, Dazzler declines joining the X-Men because she would rather focus on her career as a singer.
Gambit is pouting over Rogue. Nightcrawler teases him that his poker face is terrible and then tells him to marry her and be done.
Back to the TV program, Trish is now interviewing Cyclops. The camera guy wants him to remove his glasses but of course he can't. He tries to talk about being a leader of the mutants but Trish just wants to know about Marvel Girl aka Jean Grey.
Jean is outside in the middle of the lake, literally, going through memories. Wolverine joins her. They are both avoiding Trish and her questions.
Jean recalls a time in the past when Scott was also unsure about her, it is when she acquired the power of The Phoenix. But it was Scott and his eyes that were anchoring her. She kisses Wolverine who tells her to go talk to Scott.
Trish pushes Cyclops about Nathan Summers. Cyclops gets angry and tells her mutants and people aren't alike and thank God because mutants are the only reason people are alive.
Back on Genosha, the council is meeting with Magneto. Emma Frost wants him to be their poster child King. Moira MacTaggert is not a fan of this idea. Madelyne defends Moira and says they agreed Magneto would be called Chancellor.
Also in the room is Sebastian Shaw. He's never been one to be trusted, just saying.
Magneto doesn't want the job but Moira says if Charles trusted him with the X-Men then they should trust him with this. He remembers when he and Charles met at a bar in Germany and he shared his dream. “Any dream worth having is a dream worth dying for.” He accepts on one condition…
Rogue is angry at Magneto, he wants to make her his Queen for political reasons.
Scott and Jean speak. She comforts him about getting angry and asks him to talk about Nathan. Unfortunately it was actually Madelyne, on the astral plane. Jean appears and is angry, she feels betrayed. They argue when she is attacked mentally by something or someone.
On Genosha, everyone is getting ready for the Gala. Gambit is looking sharp in a white tuxedo when Rogue shows up and tells him the story of how she met Magneto and about his offer. Rogue wants to help others and thinks becoming Queen might be the way to do it. Gambit lets her go but he wagers it won't end well for Rogue.
In the sky, The Watcher can be seen in the upper left corner as the fireworks go off.
The song Happy Nation that plays while Magneto and Rogue dance is performed by Ace of Base.
It looks like Bastion can be seen walking around in the upper levels of the party, when Magneto looks up. Bastion is a human/sentinel hybrid who hates mutants and has all kinds of crazy powers making him mostly immortal.
Madelyne is also attacked by the power that hit Jean. They see visions and hear Cable aka Nathan Summers talking.
Rogue kisses Magneto but realizes her heart lies with Gambit. She turns Magneto down.
Outside Cable is there from the future. He knows what is about to happen- a Sentinel Attack. He is pulled back into the future before he can help them.
Nightcrawler saves Rogue and Magneto but is injured. Gambit tells them too many have died and that this Sentinel isn't like the others.
Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit make a plan to save the Morlocks who are pinned down.
They are up against the Tri-Sentinel, a Sentinel with 3 heads. It was created by the Shaw Industries for Project Nimrod, which was a plan to wipe out the mutants.
Seeing all the destruction Magneto becomes angry, this is just like his childhood. The Tri-Sentinel zeroes in on him because he is an Omega-Level Threat.
Magneto and the Morlocks are seemingly killed by the Tri-Sentinel. Rogue goes to attack but Gambit saves her and then attacks it himself. He is stabbed by the machine but imbues it with his power and blows it up, also seemingly dying.
The others watch from home, horrified. Rogue holds Gambit and cries, she can't feel him.
