X-Men 97 Episode 3 Easter Eggs & Breakdown
“Our” Jean uses her powers to look into “new” Jean's mind. She says it's almost like all of these memories were created yesterday. She sees a lab and how Jean escapes. Seeing the X-Men on tv, gave Jean hope that she would survive if she could find them. Someone chuckles inside her mind and Jean gasps.
Beast tells them that according to his labs, he has carbon dated the Jeans. The “new” Jean is older while “our” Jean is a clone. This worries them all, but Jean is upset no one believes she is the real one. She storms out of the lab telling them Storm would have believed her.
In the comics, Nathan Summers' (aka CABLE) mother was a clone of Jean Grey named Madelyne Pryor. This clone was created by Mr. Sinister who wanted Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey to have a baby together. He knew this baby would become one of the most powerful mutants. Sinister was hoping to take the baby and control it, using Nathan to eventually defeat Apocalypse.
The outer space fight mentioned in Episode 2 was a reference to the Phoenix Force and is the point in the comics where everyone presumed Jean was dead. But she wasn't, more like she was in a stasis after the influx in power thanks to the Dark Phoenix. Meanwhile, Sinister had created the clone but it seemed as if she was without power or any special abilities. While Jean was out of commission, a spark of the Phoenix Force made its way to Madelyne, since she was genetically a match for Jean Grey. This newfound power renewed Sinister's interest in her and his plan.
Clone Jean is in Nathan's room, holding her son when a voice is heard through the baby monitor. He claims he has the answers she is looking for.
Back in the lab, Beast is continuing his work on the time bands for Bishop, so that he can travel back to his own timeline. He reveals to everyone that he has figured out who cloned Jean– Mr. Sinister.
On the baby monitor, Mr. Sinister tells Jean to call him father. She figures out he wants Nathan and starts to refuse. But he floods her with memories as well as his power, which can control her since he made her. She transforms into The Goblin Queen.
Coming out of the Danger Room, Morph makes a comment about Rogue and Magneto having the room booked up. Gambit looks upset but Morph shrugs him off and heads to take a shower.
In the locker room, the shower turns on before he reaches it. Meanwhile Gambit is seeing visions of Rogue with Magneto (the two aren't even in the mansion). Jubilee and Roberto are under a psychological attack too– it's all Madelyne’s doing. The Goblin Queen is attacking them with their nightmares. Like Dante’s Inferno, Beast quips.
The real Jean has woken up and saves them from the nightmares. But the Goblin Queen appears, throwing them all back before taking Nathan and disappearing.
Rogue and Magneto come back and get the status report from Morph. Mr. Sinister is a villain from the 1800s, who by cutting up mutants and taking their abilities, was able to enhance himself and prolong his life. Morph has been a victim of Sinister’s machinations (something he was saved from in the original series.) He offers to lead them to Sinister's hideout.
In Sinister's lab, he takes baby Nathan and places him in a container of green slime, saying he must be made invulnerable.
Magneto, Cyclops, Morph, and Bishop are there to save Nathan but first they must deal with The Goblin Queen. She takes control of Morph then attacks Magneto. Cyclops attacks her but she takes control of him too.
Back at the mansion, Wolverine is trying to help Jean remember how to use her powers. She senses Scott is in danger and gathers her strength to attack the Goblin Queen from the mansion by using astral projection. Jeans takes the Goblin Queen back through their memories. Jean wants to help her not fight her. By remembering Nathan, Madelyne is able to break Sinister’s hold on her.
Madelyne tells Cyclops “let's go save Nathan” and they rush into the lab. Unfortunately they are too late. Beast tells them Nathan has been infected with a Techno-Organic Virus strain. The Techno-Organic Virus transforms organic material into techno-organic material, which resembles both machinery and living tissue. All techno-organic cells function like independent machines that carry both the virus and all information about the cell including memories and appearance. Which means, individuals with this virus would be able to rebuild themselves from a single cell.
Nathan needs a cure but Beast isn’t sure he could develop one in time. They decide to send Nathan to the future with Bishop in an attempt to save his life. But the time bands can only transport Nathan and Bishop meaning Scott and Madelyne must say goodbye to their son.
Madelyne takes Nathan, using her telepathy, shares her and Scott's thoughts and feelings about Nathan into his mind, that way he won’t feel abandoned. She hands him to Bishop and the two travel into the future.
Meanwhile in Texas, Storm is greeted by Forge, an old friend of Xavier's. He claims he can help her get back what she has lost. Forge has the ability, among others, to create mechanical devices using his keen knowledge. One such item he created was the gun used by X-Cutioner to take Storm's powers. He wants to help her because he is the indirect reason she is in this situation to begin with.
