Marvel Studios dropped a new trailer for Eternals, set to hit theaters November 5. Unlike the previous teaser, this one revealed a look at the Celestials and the Deviants. Plus Kit Harrington's Dane Whitman asked the question we have all be wondering. Read on for my Eternals trailer breakdown and see everything you may have missed.
Eternals Trailer Breakdown
Ajak (Salma Hayek) goes to find Ikaris (Richard Madden), because the events of Avengers Endgame has provided enough energy for the Emergence to begin. The Emergence could mean either the coming of the Deviants, the villainous off-shoots of the Eternals or more likely it means the return of the Celestials who created both the Eternals and the Deviants. Either way they have 7 days until it happens.
Sersi (Gemma Chan) explains to Dane Whitman (Kit Harrington) that the Eternals have been on Earth for 7,000 years. They came to protect humans from the Deviants. Ironically Thanos is technically a Deviant as he is an Eternal possessing the deviant gene. The Deviant Gene is also connected to the mutant X-factor chromosome.
He wants to know why they didn't help with Thanos or any of the other large scale threats humans have faced during that time. She tells him they were instructed by the Celestials not to interfere. In the trailer we get a glimpse of Arishem the Judge. In the comics Arishem is one of two Celestials with the right and ability to judge a planet's civilization, determining who should live and who should die.
Ikaris tells Ajak they need to find the others. The Eternals have been hidden throughout the world since they came here 7,000 years ago.
Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) raises their ship from the desert sands.
After seeing some of their powers in action another Celestial appears, this one is Jemiah the Analyzer. In the comics he has an unsurpassed amount of knowledge of many things including genetics and mathematics.
Thena is told the Eternals won't be able to save any of the humans. Cut to more fighting and another impressive display of Ikaris' powers.
The final moments are more lighthearted with Ikaris and Sersi at Phastos' safe house. Ikaris thinks Phastos has the best house and the table is probably vibranium. It is not. It is from Ikea and now it is broken. I adore that the Eternals also love Ikea for their cheap yet great furniture.
What are the Deviants in Eternals?
Deviants are the opposite of the Eternals. Unlike the Eternals who have godlike powers and are genetically beautiful, Deviants (the changing people) are grotesque. Some are born with mutations that provide them with superhuman powers but they are generally not as strong as the Eternals. Those that are exceptionally deformed are called mutates. Those are what we see in this trailer. Other Deviants are intelligent and know a lot about genetic mutations. Skrulls are also deviants.
Another random note, Deviants were originally created by the Celestials as a food source.
Eternals is in theaters November 5, 2021.
